Muir Press

One hundred years after the loss of John Muir, this press was founded by Carolyn Losee, a Northern California counterculturalist-cum-culture ecologist who learned very early how good it feels to be outdoors. The poet Gary Snyder wandered the press’s nearby woods when circumambulating Mount Tamalpais in 1965 with the Beats, reflecting how our relationship to place is “real,” and how the mountain responded as they climbed her. Muir Press is about re-establishing connections between people and the natural environment—about cultivating a deep sense of place and reverence for the wild. We encourage the conservation of the natural environment, the preservation of cultural knowledge, and the celebration of wilderness.
